It is said that there used to be a scholar surnamed Wei who studied in a Buddhist temple on a mountain. He usually studied very seriously, and it was difficult to notice changes in the surrounding environment.

Once, he suddenly realized that he was the only one living in this Buddhist temple, but he had never cleaned it. Whether it was the bed, the table or the ground, there was no dust. The scholar felt very strange, but he didn't know why.

One day, he went down the mountain to buy something, but he missed the time and came back very late. Just as he was about to open the door, he suddenly heard the sound of someone walking in the house. The scholar looked inside through the crack of the door and found that someone was tidying up the scholar's desk.

The scholar lightly opened the door, and then rushed in at once. When the man saw the scholar, he immediately ran out of the window. The scholar immediately stopped him and walked slowly, only to see the man standing respectfully outside the window.

Shu Sheng said, "Who are you? Are you cleaning my place? Why are you doing this?"

The man replied, "I am a fox spirit who studies Confucianism, and you are an upright gentleman who studies Taoism.

The scholar was not afraid, and began to chat with the fox spirit through the window. Since then, the fox spirit often came here to discuss with the scholar, and the scholar did not hide from him, and they gradually became friends.

One day Shu Sheng suddenly asked the fox spirit a question: "Do you think I can become a sage like myself?"

The fox spirit replied: "You are practicing Taoism, there is no such thing as sages. Sages speak of the mean, that is to enter the world to cultivate one's mind, do things in a down-to-earth manner, and focus on using one's own knowledge. Taoism, on the other hand, attaches great importance to the in-depth discussion of the relationship between heaven and earth, and focuses on being born, without the ambition to make achievements."

"As for this, it doesn't matter what kind of knowledge you practice. The reason why I respect you is because you are magnificent and upright. You respect your elders, teach your juniors carefully, and be honest with others.

After saying this, Wei Shusheng let him go, and since then the scholar's house has been very clean.
