A poor scholar, Li Ruming, studied hard in the cold window of a ruined temple in order to be admitted to the Golden List of the Imperial Examination. Suddenly, an old man and a beautiful woman came to Li Sheng's ruined temple, as if fleeing famine. Li Sheng's servants wanted to spoon more rice to cook and entertain them, but Li Sheng was stingy; after knowing that the old man and the woman would also eat his rice, they felt that cooking was too expensive, so they ordered the servants to cook a large pot of porridge, and said: "Contentment is always happy. Hungry people should not overeat, otherwise they will die. The medical book says that gruel can regulate the spleen and stomach."
Li Sheng's assertion is also laughable, for example, it is in sharp contrast to the poor child who said, "If you don't eat meat, is meat not delicious?"; although his poverty is real, he said something to hide his frugality and even stinginess. This is ridiculous!
The beautiful woman happened to hear Li Sheng's words outside the window, and at first she still thought that Li Sheng was very interesting; so she turned Li Sheng's pen holder into a gold ingot. Li Sheng saw that his pen holder had turned into a gold ingot, and held it in his hand and exclaimed, "Strange, strange..."
The servant made the gruel, and Li Sheng came out of the room and saw that the beautiful woman's eyes were straight, and he liked it very much. Li Sheng greeted the old man, and it turned out that the old man's surname was Gu, and the beautiful woman was his granddaughter, called Mao Gu.
Li Sheng invited the lonely old man and Mao Gu to take a seat, and there were four bowls of gruel and a plate of dried radish on a table, which was very poor! Mao Gu used chopsticks to even the gruel in the bowl and read Li Sheng's "gruel theory." Li Sheng and his servants were stunned when they heard this, and Mao Gu satirized Li Sheng with a couplet of Maitreya Buddha as a ridiculous person; Li Sheng was ashamed and had to bow his head to drink porridge.
In the evening, Li Sheng was admiring the ingot of gold; suddenly Mao Gu opened the door with a dustpan and came in to scoop rice, which scared Li Sheng to cover the ingot of gold with a book. Li Sheng blocked Mao Gu and said that there was only half a jar of rice left, but Mao Gu said that the jar was clearly full; so she lifted the head of the rice tank, and as expected, a jar of rice was full. Li Sheng was surprised and delighted, feeling incredible.
With a vat full of rice, Li Sheng was finally willing to cook rice. But Mao Gu disliked eating dried radish every day, and told his grandfather to go on his way! How could Li Sheng be willing to let her go, so he had to be generous for the sake of beauty? So he took out his tightly hidden three-hanging copper coins and gave them to Mao Gu to buy fish and meat. But this is not enough! The naughty Mao Gu reached out and took away the two coins from Li Sheng's hand. Although Li Sheng was very reluctant to bear it, he had to compromise when he thought of the vat of rice. When Li Sheng looked back at the small box that originally contained money, it turned into a box full of copper coins; Li Sheng was pleasantly surprised and thought to himself: What a fairy! Anitobo Buddha...
Li Sheng and Mao Gu had a sumptuous dinner with wine and meat. After dinner, Mao Gu asked the servant if Li Sheng was married, and the servant said that Li Shengqiong had not yet married. Mao Gu felt that although Li Sheng was stingy, he had no big problems, and she still liked Li Sheng; Gu Lao Man naturally knew Mao Gu's thoughts, so he told Li Sheng that he had something to go back to his hometown, and if Li Sheng wanted to keep Mao Gu to accompany him. Gu Lao Man also explained their identities to Li Sheng. It turned out that he and Mao Gu were fox immortals.
Of course, Li Sheng was interested, but he was too poor, and he was afraid that he would neglect Mao Gu. The lonely old man also understood that Li Sheng's family was poor, so he was willing to use a lot of money as a dowry. Li Sheng was very happy and wanted to thank the lonely old man. The lonely old man told him that it was not too late to say goodbye on the day of the wedding.
Suddenly there was a sound of thunder, and it started to rain. The lonely old man wanted to take advantage of this situation to go back, and before leaving, he told Li Sheng to prepare his pockets quickly; so he pointed to the roof, a cloud of white smoke rose, and a hole suddenly opened in the roof. Li Sheng thought it was going to rain, but who knew that all the copper coins came down from the hole, and then Li Sheng's greedy nature was on display!
The lonely old man asked Li Sheng to put the copper coins that fell from the hole in a bag. Li Sheng hurriedly dressed the money, and he was still not satisfied with filling several large bags! Seeing this, the lonely old man reminded Li Sheng that people should not be greedy and leave. But Li Sheng ignored everything, and the lonely old man did not send it when he left, but only packed the money; he packed as much money as he had left, and the bag was gone. He was busy looking for something else to put in, turning a deaf ear to the persuasion of Mao Gu and the servants! Seeing Li Sheng's insatiable greed, Mao Gu once again dissuaded Li Sheng: "Greedy people will achieve nothing!"
But Li Sheng only had money in his eyes, and he was busy looking for boxes to hold money, so he dumped his precious book on the ground; the vegetables were also dumped on the ground to free up bamboo frames to hold money! All the bags, boxes and bamboo frames were full, but the money still fell from the hole like rain, and Li Sheng poured rice into the rice bowl to hold the money. Aunt Mao stood by and witnessed Li Sheng's greedy and ugly side, and left helplessly. I am not surprised and sighed, but I didn't expect that Guxian would look at people wrong!
Just after Mao Gu left, the money stopped falling from the hole; Li Sheng's full bags, boxes and copper coins in the bamboo frame began to float towards the hole on the roof and turned into nothingness. All the bags, boxes and bamboo frames became empty again, and there was not a single copper coin in them! And the money in the rice bowl in Li Sheng's hand had long since drifted towards the hole and turned into nothingness. Li Sheng looked at all the empty bags and boxes… Unacceptable and turned into a madman! Gain and lose in an instant.
Li Sheng's greed made him the opportunity to live a happy and prosperous life and instantly returned to the original point, even worse than before!
