It is said that during the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, there was a man named Zhang Sixi. This man's family was so poor that he often couldn't open the pot. In order to make a living, Zhang Sixi went out to work as a domestic worker and helped people do farm work to make a living.
However, Zhang Sixi's job was not stable, because the helper was a short-term job, unlike long-term long-term workers, work was relatively stable. Therefore, Zhang Sixi often wandered around, going wherever he had a job, and the days were very hard.
This year, Zhang Sixi came to a place called Wanquan Mountain to work for a family. The owners of this house were an old couple. Because of their old age and frailty, they hired Zhang Sixi to weed and fertilize their vegetable garden. Zhang Sixi was very diligent in this family, and the work was not too dirty and not afraid of the cold, which made the old couple very happy.
The old couple had a daughter at home, and when they reached the age of marriage, they had not yet found a suitable in-law. Seeing that Zhang Sixi was young and strong and worked hard, they asked Zhang Sixi to be their door-to-door son-in-law. Zhang Sixi naturally asked for it, after all, he had a problem eating, so it would be good to be a son-in-law.
A few years later, the old couple said to Zhang Sixi and his wife, "We are going to see your sister outside the Great Wall." After the old couple left, Zhang Sixi felt bored and left Wanquan Mountain with his wife to live elsewhere.
Later, Zhang Sixi found out that his wife was not a human, but a fox. Zhang Sixi was deeply ashamed because he thought he was human, how could he sleep with beasts as a husband and wife? So he wanted to get rid of the fox wife and marry a real woman.
One day, when the fox wife was standing in the yard, Zhang Sixi quietly took out a bow and arrow and shot at his wife. The arrow struck the fox wife's left thigh, and blood flowed out immediately. After the fox wife was shot, she was very surprised and sad.
The fox wife angrily scolded Zhang Sixi and said, "Lang Jun, you are too ungrateful and resentful! You dislike me as a fox, but other foxes charm human beings and are wild; while I obey the orders of my parents and marry you according to etiquette, which is the righteousness of husband and wife. As the saying goes: husband is wife, so I dare not take revenge on you; since you insist on abandoning me, I dare not force you to stay by my side."
After saying that, the fox wife held Zhang Sixi's hand and cried bitterly. After less than two hours, the fox wife fell to the ground and died. Zhang Sixi also panicked at this time, quickly packed up the gold and silver and left, and then fled back to his hometown alone. After returning home, Zhang Sixi not only failed to find a wife, but became seriously ill. A few years later, he ran out of money and died of illness.
After Zhang Sixi died of illness, his parents couldn't afford a coffin to bury him, so they were very worried about it. Just when they were at a loss, the fox wife suddenly came in crying from outside, and then went to the hall to kneel down to Zhang Sixi's parents, and told them about his relationship with Zhang Sixi. The fox wife said, "I was feigning death at that time, but I haven't married yet, so I can come here as a daughter-in-law to meet the two elders."
Zhang Sixi's mother was very touched and scolded Zhang Sixi for being ungrateful and not a thing. The fox wife bowed her head and said nothing, and Zhang Sixi's neighbor sister also scolded Zhang Sixi and complained to the fox wife when she heard this. Who knew that after the fox wife heard it, she glared at the eldest sister and said, "Parents scold their sons for everything; how can you scold other people's wives and other people's husbands?" After saying that, the fox wife walked away without a trace.
After the fox wife left, Zhang Sixi's parents got five taels of silver next to Zhang Sixi's body, and they used silver to organize a decent funeral for Zhang Sixi. After Zhang Sixi's death, his parents lived even poorer, but they often found money and rice noodles in the basin in the house, which were probably sent by the fox wife.
People said that the fox wife not only had the same body as a human, but also had the same good heart as a human. Some people also said that although the fox wife knew books and was polite, she would not have such a noble realm. This was probably a story that Feng Pingyu deliberately compiled, wanting to use this story to make those ungrateful people feel ashamed.
Mr. Ji's father, Yao Angong, said: "Although Feng Pingyu is an old man in the village, he is honest and has never told a lie in his life. When I talked to him, he acted very wooden, so the story of this fox wife is not made up by him, but real."
