Allusions: Emperor Taizu of Song Zhao Kuangyin had a total of five brothers, the eldest and the fifth died early. Emperor Taizu of Song ascended the emperor's throne the second year, his mother, Empress Dowager Du, fell seriously ill. On her deathbed, she called Song Dazu and confidant minister Zhao Pu to her side and instructed Song Dazu to first pass the throne to Zhao Guangyi, the third, after his death, to Zhao Tingmei, the fourth, and then pass the throne to Emperor Taizu of Song's son. Zhao Pu was ordered to make a record, which was treasured by Song Taizu.
In 976 AD, Emperor Taizu of Song fell seriously ill. When he was critically ill, he followed his mother's will and did not pass the throne to his son, but ordered the throne to be passed on to his younger brother Zhao Guangyi. After Emperor Taizu of Song died, Zhao Guangyi ascended the throne, and he became Emperor Taizong of Song.
Still in the reign of Emperor Taizu of Song, the fourth Zhao Tingmei was named King of Wei. After Emperor Taizong of Song became emperor, he made him Yin of Kaifeng Mansion; Zhao Tingmei was pushy and headstrong since childhood. As he grew older, he became more arrogant and domineering, and he could do whatever he wanted, and no one could do anything for him.
He also knew his mother's will. Now that he saw that his third brother Zhao Guangyi had become emperor, he wanted his third brother to die as soon as possible so that the throne could be passed on to him. Later, he saw that Emperor Taizong of Song was in good health and had little chance of succeeding the throne in the short term, so he tried to use conspiracy means to seize the throne.
One day, Emperor Taizong of Song, Zhao Guangyi, asked the prime minister, Zhao Pu to discuss his views on the issue of succession, and asked him whether he should pass the throne to his son or follow his mother's wishes and pass the throne to his younger brother, King Wei. Zhao Pu said, "Your Majesty, the Great Ancestor Emperor did not pass the throne to his son, but passed the throne to you, which is already wrong; if you pass the throne to King Wei again, but not to your own son, isn't it a mistake, a mistake again and again?"
Emperor Taizong of Song heard this, and then gave up the idea of passing the throne to King Wei. Soon, someone reported that King Wei Zhao Tingmei was plotting to rebel, and Zhao Pu said to Taizong: "King Wei has bad intentions, you can exile him to a remote place to prevent him from launching a rebellion."
Emperor Taizong of Song followed Zhao Pu's advice, cut off Zhao Tingmei's title as King Wei, and demoted him to the remote Fangzhou. Soon Zhao Tingmei died of depression.
