In the vast East China Sea, there is an island under the wall with an area of only 1.2 square kilometers. The small island belongs to Shengshan Town, Shengsi County, Zhoushan City, Zhejiang Province. The permanent population of the island is less than 100 households. For more than two months a year, the only fixed boat between the island and the outside world will be stopped due to excessive wind and waves. The island is too small and too remote, and residents have traveled one wave after another, but so far, Zhong Xingju, a 56-year-old female doctor in the community under the wall, has stayed here for 35 years.
The distance between the north and south ends of Pixia Island is only 2 kilometers, and the residential buildings are built on the rock wall according to the trend. Not long ago, the reporter came to Pixia Island for an interview and followed Zhong Xingju on a visit. He ran back and forth five times, and every time he ran to a house, he had to walk steep steps. Walking forward in plastic rain boots, Zhong Xingju was panting heavily, and her calves were shaking in her trousers.
Zhong Xingju told reporters that she had wanted to be a doctor since she was a child. When she was 17, her mother died early due to cold at the seaside; three years later, her younger brother contracted tuberculosis osteitis. Every household on the island has suffered from a lack of medical care. The idea of treating patients and saving people took root in Zhong Xingju's heart. At the age of 20, Zhong Xingju, a substitute teacher, was given the opportunity to study in Zhoushan City, but she managed to transfer to a health school and eventually became an island doctor.
For more than 30 years, the island's doctors came and went, and in the end Zhong Xingju was the only one left. Her only daughter began living in a friend's house in the county seat at the age of 10. Her husband, who suffered from various chronic diseases, was diagnosed with uremia, and the medical facilities on the island were backward. When the condition worsened, the couple had to rush to the big hospital by boat. Zhong Xingju struggled many times to leave or stay, but finally chose to stay.
The inhabitants of the island below the wall are mostly the elderly. Hypertension and heart disease are extremely common. Zhong Xingju keeps the blood pressure monitor by her side at any time and measures everyone. Every half month, she visits dozens of households on the island, and each island resident has a "living case" in her heart. The attachment of the island residents is a part of Zhong Xingju's heart that is difficult to part with. She often said that the doctors in small places are not very skilled in medicine, but at least they must be responsible. No matter how small the island is or how large the population is, with a doctor, ordinary people can feel at ease.
The elderly cannot travel on the island, and Zhong Xingju, who travels from house to house, has become a "caring person" for the residents of the island. Anyone who is troubled or confused loves to talk to Zhong Xingju. The female doctor, who is so nervous that she cries in public speeches at the venue, has endless words as long as she faces her patients.
A mother on the island had just lost her little son and had to rely on infusions to maintain her physical function for more than ten days. After hanging up the water, Zhong Xingju would accompany her for a long time, chatting with her about her physical condition and psychological feelings, and instructing her to gradually resume her diet.
Ms. Zhong said that the most important thing a doctor hopes for is a speedy recovery of patients, but the pain is often hidden in people's hearts. "Only when the heart is warm can we get better quickly."
One year, a young fisherman from other places suddenly suffered from lobar pneumonia while working under the wall. After being sent to the island, Zhong Xingju, who was already waiting on the shore, quickly implemented first aid and saved the fisherman from the death line. Next, the patient was hospitalized and had to eat. There were no restaurants on the island, so Zhong Xingju prepared three meals a day at her own home and delivered them, and also told the young man "don't worry about it, just treat it as a few meals at your own home."
When she has free time, Zhong Xingju likes to read books and newspapers. When she reads something that benefits her, she makes newspaper clippings and pastes them on the desk of the health service center to share with the villagers.
"Between people, a little more tolerance, a little more understanding, a little more sincerity, a little more humility, a little more friendship, a little more dedication, and our society will be more harmonious and beautiful." The note, dated March 2005, was copied by Zhong Xingju from a local party journal. The paper was damp and moldy, and the handwriting was blurred. Zhong Xingju was ready to change a piece of paper and copy it again. "Many villagers also said that this passage is good. I want everyone to see it," she said.
Zhong Xingju, who gives warmth to others, is increasingly feeling the warmth of others. The islanders regarded her as their own family. Fresh vegetables on the island are mainly brought from the outside by fishing boats. The vegetables grown by the residents in the narrow open space between the rock walls are "rare", but as soon as Zhong Xingju arrives, there are always residents who pick the vegetables and shove them into her hands.
The deeds of the outstanding Communist Party member Zhong Xingju have aroused strong repercussions in Zhejiang. However, after receiving the praise at the report meeting, Zhong Xingju returned to the health center and closed the door and cried: "Communist Party members should have suffered in front of them. I have done some internal affairs but received so much care. I was so moved that I wanted to cry."
Zhong Xingju is old, diabetes and presbyopia have begun to bother her life, and Zhong Xingju, who refused to leave in the past, now occasionally has a little retreat, "because the older you get, the more afraid you are, and the injections can't be seen clearly. If something goes wrong, it will affect the lives of the people." Zhong Xingju said that she is waiting for the younger generation to take over the island, but even if she leaves, she will often come back to see, because there are ordinary people here who she has cared about all her life.
