Once upon a time, West Lake was called Taurus Lake.
At that time, the lake was still a vast expanse of white water, and along the shores of the lake were fertile land of black oil and oil. The surrounding people grew crops there and used the lake water to irrigate, and the ears of rice grew round like strings of pearls. When the farms were idle, everyone would fish and fish in the lake. People live in harmony and live a happy life.
At the bottom of the lake, there lived a Taurus. As long as the weather cleared for a long time and the lake slowly shallowened, the Taurus in the lake would appear: from afar, you could see its golden swaying back, its raised bull head and its raised horns. It spat out mouthfuls of water, and the lake immediately swelled up again.
One summer, it had not rained for ninety-nine and eighty-one days, and the lake was so dry that the surrounding fields were as hard as stones, the cracks were inches wide, and the green seedlings were withered and yellow. The common people were so thirsty that their eyes were sunken and they were bored. They looked forward to the appearance of the Taurus every day.
One morning, just as everyone was standing by the lake looking forward to the Taurus, a "moo" was suddenly heard, and the Taurus broke out from the bottom of the lake. He shook his head, waved his tail, spat out water, and in an instant the lake was full again.
The common people were so happy that they shed tears and were grateful to the Taurus. The Taurus raised his head, his sparkling eyes flashed, "moo" and disappeared into the lake again.
The matter spread quickly. Land protection was passed on to the yamen, and the yamen reported to the Qiantang county official. When the county official heard this, he held his belly and said with a smile:
"This is really a living treasure. If I present it to the emperor, I will definitely be able to file a lawsuit and make a fortune!" Immediately, he ordered his subordinates to hurry up and capture the golden bull.
Those yamen and the land guards hurriedly ran to the lake and looked up. In front of them was a vast white lake, where was the golden bull? Ask the nearby people, when they saw someone from the yamen, they either said they didn't see it or quietly avoided it.
The yamen couldn't think of anything, so they had to repay the county officials. The county official was angry, twisted his beard, thought and thought, and came up with a bad idea. He said to his men:
"If that's the case, call all the common people over and dry up the lake. Whoever does not come will be beheaded."
The common people living by the lake, men, women, the old, and the young, were all driven. Under the coercion from county officials, they had to set up a water cart and carry the lake water with tears in their eyes.
The car and the car had been driving for ninety-nine and eighty-one days, and everyone was exhausted. On the last day, the lake car was finally dried up. Sure enough, the golden light on the Taurus lay at the bottom of the lake, and the world was bright.
The county official was so illuminated by the golden light that he could not even open his eyes, but he still shouted to the yamen to hurry down to the lake to grab the golden ox. Strange to say, the golden ox seemed to take root, and it could not be lifted or lifted. The common people were secretly happy in their hearts.
When the county official saw that he could not move it, he said to the people:
"Who can lift up the Taurus and reward 300 silver!"
However, the common people stood still and ignored him angrily.
When the county official saw that the people were ignoring him, he roared loudly:
"If you don't lift up the Taurus today, I'll kill you all!"
As soon as the county official finished speaking, the Taurus let out a loud cry, like a thunderbolt in the sky. I saw the sand fly away and the earth shake. The county official was so frightened that his face was as pale as the earth, his legs were weak, and he wanted to escape, but he couldn't take a step.
At this time, the Taurus turned his round eyes, stood up, looked up at the sky and barked again, spit out white water from his mouth, rushed straight to the county officials and the yamen, and swept them all into the huge waves.
Immediately the lake filled up again.
From then on, the golden bulls in the lake no longer appeared, the lake was never dry again, and people could not forget the golden bulls. They built a tall tower on the city wall next to the lake, and climbed the tower every day to look forward to the golden bulls. This tower was later the "Surging Golden Gate."
