The Carpenter and the Ghost

There was a little carpenter who once went out to work and come home late. On the way he was going to pass a big mountain, and when he left, the villagers said to him, "There is a spirit on the mountain that often comes out to harm people, and no one dares to pass there at night." The little carpenter smiled and said, "People are three times afraid of ghosts, and ghosts are seven times afraid of people. Whatever it is, there is nothing to be afraid of." After saying that, he went on his way with an axe.

After a while, the little carpenter came to the mountains. The moonlight was very good, and the path meandered from the woods to the front. The little carpenter only hurried on his way, and the mountain breeze passed by his ears. The mountains near and far appeared and faded in the hazy night.

After walking for a while, the little carpenter felt that something was wrong, and he kept walking around in circles. He carefully identified the direction before walking, but he still returned to the same place. The little carpenter thought it must be a monster confusing himself. But he didn't panic. Instead, he gathered some dead branches and leaves from the roadside, started a fire, and simply didn't go.

The little carpenter estimated that the ghost would come out sooner or later, so he sat down on the ground, resting his axe on his lap, and adding wood to the fire from time to time. The fire grew stronger and stronger, and there were some "crackling" sounds mixed in, which was particularly clear in the deserted mountains. Under the reflection of the raging fire, the little carpenter's face appeared very calm and resolute.

After a while, the little carpenter heard someone greet him: "Hey, little brother, why are you cooking a fire here alone?"

By the light of the fire, the little carpenter saw a beautiful woman standing not far away, looking at him affectionately in Maimai. How could there be a woman in the middle of the night in this barren mountain? He knew it was a ghost, so he quietly said, "I'm lost."

The woman said enthusiastically, "My family lives nearby. I'm very familiar with this place. Little brother, let me take you out."

Seeing this, the little carpenter said bluntly, "Don't pretend, I know you are a ghost."

Seeing that the little carpenter had pierced his face, the spirit monster immediately changed its tone: "Since you know I'm a spirit monster, aren't you afraid?"

The little carpenter glanced at it, and the beautiful woman just now turned into an old and ugly old woman, with a face like a mottled old bark. She stretched out her withered fingers, as if to catch the little carpenter. But it is estimated that because the little carpenter is sitting by the fire, she dare not rush forward.

The little carpenter was startled. Although he was mentally prepared, he was still very scared. However, he immediately calmed down and deliberately said lightly, "What's so scary about this?"

The performance of the little carpenter was a little unexpected. Those who had entered the mountain at night were either fascinated by her transformation into a beautiful woman or scared by her appearance. It was the first time she had encountered someone as calm as the little carpenter. However, she did not believe that the little carpenter could not be scared, so she asked: "You are really not afraid, look at me again!" Then she walked forward and became even more terrifying.

The little carpenter quietly put the axe in the fire, still not raising his head, saying that he was not afraid. The spirit monster made many terrifying faces again, but no matter how the spirit monster changed, the little carpenter always said that he was not afraid. Because of the fire, the spirit monster never dared to approach the little carpenter.

After many changes, the spirit was a little discouraged. She turned into that beautiful woman again, and said pitifully to the little carpenter, "Don't you have anything to be afraid of?"

The little carpenter purposely said, "There is, but you may not become it."

Hearing what the little carpenter said, the spirit monster got excited and hurriedly said, "What is that? You say, I will definitely become out."

The little carpenter said, "Once, a man in our village hanged himself. His eyes were closed, his tongue was stretched out, and his mouth was wide open. I am still very scared when I think about it."

The spirit monster was very excited when he heard that, and immediately turned into a hung ghost, his eyes closed, his bloody mouth opened, and his tongue hung to his chest...

Seeing this, the little carpenter used lightning speed to insert the red-hot axe from the bloody mouth of the ghost into his throat. Only a scream was heard, and the ghost fled.

The next day, the woodcutter found a huge vine tree with an axe stuck in it and a black liquid dripping underneath.

Not long after, the vine gradually died. From then on, no more spirits appeared in the mountains.
