When Su Shi was sitting in court in Hangzhou, one day, a well-dressed businessperson presented a lawsuit. Su Shi took a look and wrote: "The plaintiff, Wu Xiaoyi, sued Zhang Er for not repaying the money he owed." He asked Wu Xiaoyi, "What money does Zhang Er owe you?"
Wu Xiaoyi replied, "He borrowed 20,000 yuan from the villain last spring, and the IOU said it would be returned within three months. It has been a year and has not paid a penny. I implore my husband to call the shots and recover them."
Su Shi ordered the officer to send Zhang Er over for interrogation immediately. After a while, Zhang Er was brought in. Su Shi saw that it was an old man with a thin face and ragged clothes, and he did not feel pity. He asked kindly, "Wu Xiaoyi sued you for owed him 20,000 Ayaki money, but is this the case?"
Zhang Er respectfully replied, "It's true that I owe him twenty thousand."
Su Shi asked again, "Since it's true, why hasn't the money been repaid after it has expired for a long time?"
Zhang Er looked sad and replied in a low voice, "It's not that the villain intentionally defaulted on the debt, it's actually insolvent."
Su Shi then asked, "If you know you can't repay, why do you want to borrow?"
Zhang Er said: "The villain lent him the silk money to do the fan business. Who knew that the fan was good, but it was rainy and cold this spring, and it could not be sold for a while, so it is still in arrears."
Seeing that he was honest and pitiful, Su Shi felt pity for him. He said kindly, "Since you have fans as collateral, go home immediately and get some fans. I have a way to help you pay off your debts."
When Zhang Er heard that the governor had a way to help him pay off his debts, he was both happy and puzzled. Happily, the judge was the official of the imperial court, and there was no joke, and the debt repayment was definitely expected; what was puzzling was that it was difficult to sell the fan in cold weather now. Wu Xiaoyi would never agree to use the fan to pay off the debt. How would this loan be settled? He didn't think about it for a while, so he hurried home, took a basket of the best fans, carried them on his shoulders, and rushed back to the court panting.
Su Shi asked the servants to open the court and chose forty white balls and silk fans to put on the table. Then he raised the judgment pen and wrote and painted it one by one. Not long after he came to Hangzhou, when he visited the West Lake, he wrote the famous Seven Wonders "Drinking the Early Sunshine and Rain on the Lake": "The water is bright and clear, and the mountain is empty and rainy.
At this time, he also copied the poem to some fans. Some were written in cursive characters, some in running script. Other fans, or painted a few dead trees, or a piece of bamboo and stone. Each fan has the signature of "Meizhou Su Shi". He kept waving his pen, just like flowing water. Before long, he had finished writing all the forty white balls and silk fans. He threw the sentence pen, then stood up and told Zhang Erdao: "Take it and sell it quickly, and repay Wu Xiaoyi's silk money."
Only then did Zhang Er understand how Su Shi could help him pay his debts. He was overjoyed, so he quickly knelt down and knelt. He picked up forty fans from the table and left with a thousand thanks. Seeing that there was an official in charge, Wu Xiaoyi went home and waited for Zhang Erlai to pay the money.
Zhang Er carried the fan home, just in time for the long rain and the early sunshine, the warm day to drive away the cold, and it was appropriate to sell the fan. He immediately opened the door for business. Su Shi was a famous writer and poet at that time, and a great calligrapher who was as famous as Cai Xiang, Huang Tingjian, and Mi Fu, and was also famous for painting. Therefore, as soon as Zhang Er's silk fan was put on display, those who heard that Su Shi had passed the judgment and wrote the news of the fan came to the door to buy the fan. In an instant, he sold thirty-nine handles, leaving only the last one, which was left at home as a heirloom, with the virtue of Lord Zhisu's rescue. Those who came late did not buy the silk fan signed by Su Shi, and they all left in chagrin.
Zhang Er sold the fan and got 39,000 yuan at once. In addition to paying off Wu Xiaoyi's debts, the remaining 19,000 yuan was sold as a lot of fans. He swept away his frown, and was happy to chase Yan Kai, and praised Su Shi's virtue of passing judgment and helping everyone. The news that Su Shi wrote the fan to pay off the debt quickly spread throughout Hangzhou, and the people praised Su Shi as a good official who cared about people's feelings and decided the case fairly.
