Emperor Kangxi went down to the south of the Yangtze River and came to Hangzhou. He toured the mountains and waters around the West Lake, recited poems and inscribed words, and proclaimed himself a romantic emperor.

One day, he sent a message to the Lingyin Temple to cheer.

When the old monk in Lingyin Temple heard the news, he was both surprised and happy. He hurriedly rang the bell and beat the drums, and summoned more than 300 monks from the whole temple. Monks put on brand-new cassocks, wore pilu hats, tapped magic tools with their hands, and chanted Amitabha Buddha in their mouths. Everyone followed the old monk to the stone lotus pavilion outside Sanli Road to welcome Emperor Kangxi into Lingyin Temple.

The old monk accompanied Emperor Kangxi and played in front of the temple, behind the temple, and under the mountain. Emperor Kangxi saw the high mountain peaks, clear springs, green trees on the mountain, and red flowers blooming all over the ground. It was really a good place! As soon as he was happy, he ordered a vegetarian feast to be placed in the temple.

The emperor had a feast, and it was so lively! Blowing, playing, and singing, for a while, this Buddhist sect became a pure land and turned it into a royal family!

The old monk had long heard that Emperor Kangxi liked to recite poems and inscriptions. At this time, seeing his shaking head, he went to the local officials who followed Emperor Kangxi: "My lord, I want to ask the emperor to inscribe a plaque for the mountain temple, can you see it?"

The prefect of Hangzhou said, "Okay, okay, if the emperor inscribes a plaque on Lingyin Temple for you, even my entire Hangzhou mansion will be wiped out!"

Qiantang County official also added: "The emperor is full of wine, you go to ask him for a plaque at this time. I think he will agree."

The old monk had a plan in his heart, so he had the courage to kneel and kowtow in front of Emperor Kangxi: "Long live, looking at the Buddha surface of the Great Bodhisattva of Lingyin Temple, please inscribe a plaque for the mountain temple, and let us have a beautiful scenery!"

The old monk's request just scratched Emperor Kangxi's itch. He nodded, grabbed the brush and brushed it a few times, and wrote a crooked word "rain." At this time, he was already drunk, his wrists were a little trembling, and he was writing too fast. The word "rain" took up most of the paper. The word "spirit" in Lingyin Temple, according to the old way of writing, there are three "mouths" and one "witch" under "rain"! Now there is only half a piece of paper left, and you can't put it down no matter what. Write a new one, how humiliating! Emperor Kangxi grabbed the pen with one hand and kept picking up his goat whiskers with the other, but there was nothing he could do. The officials around him knew that Emperor Kangxi would not be able to leave the stage, but no one dared to say it clearly, so they could only stand by and be anxious. Fortunately, a great scholar named Gaojiang Village came up with a way. He first wrote the word "Cloud Forest" in the palm of his hand, then pretended to grind ink, approached Emperor Kangxi, and secretly spread his palm. Emperor Kangxi took a look, oops, these two words are really life-saving King Bodhisattva! Unconsciously waking up halfway, he wrote down the four big characters "Cloud Forest Temple" in a confused way. After writing, he raised his hand and threw the brush far away.

The old monk came over to take a look, it wasn't right! Why is "Lingyin Temple" written as "Yunlin Temple"? He didnot look at the style, so he stammered and asked, "We are called 'Lingyin Temple ', not 'Yunlin Temple'! Is it... the emperor wrote it wrong?"

When Emperor Kangxi heard this, he glared at him and shouted, "What a mouthful!" The old monk didn't dare to speak again, so he had to stand respectfully beside him. Emperor Kangxi turned around and asked the officials, "There are clouds in the sky and forests in the ground. Tell me, what's wrong with calling it 'Cloud Forest Temple?'"

"Yes, yes, Emperor Shengming!"

Hearing the officials flattering him, Emperor Kangxi laughed happily and ordered the plaque to be carved and hung.

With the Emperor's words, the officials were busy. When they asked someone to replace the original plaque of Lingyin Temple, they found craftsmen and engraved the four large characters "Yunlin Temple" written by Emperor Kangxi on the mahogany, with gold background, black lacquer characters, Erlong playing beads trimmed, and hung them on the mountain gate on the spot.

Since then, Lingyin Temple has hung the unworthy plaque of "Yunlin Temple". However, ordinary people in Hangzhou did not buy it. Although the plaque of "Yunlin Temple" has been hung for 300 years, people still call it "Lingyin Temple".
